Celebrate and learn about the history of the City of Ellsworth. 

The Ellsworth Schools are having a contest commemorating the 250th anniversary of the establishment of our City. The contest is open to students at all grade levels. Background:   In 1763, the Union River Settlement (which later became Ellsworth) was established. The city will celebrate the 250 Year Anniversary of settlement during the week of July 21-27, 2013.

Learning Activities Related to Sestercentennial:

Kindergarten through Grade 2 / Due Date of May 1, 2013

  • Dressed in period clothing---deliver (reading or from memory) 2-3 facts about the history of Ellsworth
  • Draw and label (on a 9-12 sheet of paper) an historic scene / building / or person from Ellsworth’s 250 years of history

Grades 3 and 4 / Due Date of May 2, 2013

  • Dressed in period clothing---deliver (reading or from memory) 3-5 facts about the history of Ellsworth
  • Design and label a hand-made 12 x 18 Poster displaying between 1 to 3 historic scene(s) / building(s) / or person(s) from Ellsworth’s 250 years of history.

Grades 5 through 8 / Due Date of May 3, 2013

  • Dressed in period clothing---deliver (reading or from memory) 5-7 facts about the history of Ellsworth
  • Design (hand-made or computer generated) a 12 x 18 Poster depicting between 1 to 3 historic scene(s) / building(s) / or person(s) from Ellsworth’s 250 years of history. Include written captions explaining each scene/building/person.

Grades 9 through 12 / Due Date of May 10, 2013

  • Dressed in period clothing---deliver (reading or from memory) 7-10 facts about the history of Ellsworth
  • Design (hand-made or computer generated) a 24 x 36 Poster depicting between 1 to 5 historic scene(s) / building(s) / or person(s) from Ellsworth’s 250 years of history. Include written captions explaining each scene/building/person. 

Quality Work Guidelines:

            The guidelines the retired teachers will use when selecting quality work samples to receive $50 Chamber Bucks Certificates will be:

                        Facts Delivered in Period Clothing:

  • The historical facts selected will be briefly stated and show and understanding of the 250 year range of the history of Ellsworth
  • The period costume will either match the year of the fact(s) chosen or be representative of clothing someone in Ellsworth would have worn from 250 years ago
  • Individual or small group presentations are acceptable
  • An index card with student name(s), grade, and teacher name(s) will be submitted to review panel prior to presentation 

Poster:

  • Any medium (pencil; crayon; watercolor; etc.) may be used
  • Scene(s) selected will show a knowledge of the 250 year history of Ellsworth
  • The overall layout, design, spacing, etc. will be visually attracting with the labeling/captions legible and easy to read
  • Individual or small group entries are acceptable
  • Every Poster will be labeled (front or back) with student name(s), grade, teacher name(s)

Possible Resources:

All entries / presentations will be viewed / reviewed by retired teachers. Four submissions for each grade range will be selected as quality work samples with the entrants classroom receiving $50 in Chamber Bucks.
